The STEM skills gap in the UK is acknowledged by government and practitioners. Central to addressing this is sharing knowledge on career opportunities in tech, and providing tangible opportunities for learning to be applied in practice. Therefore, inviting young professionals to learn with us and gain valuable experience working in tech is a central part of our commitment to social value.
At InformedAcademy, we offer a hands-on training programme complete with comprehensive support from senior staff through weekly coaching sessions, regular appraisals, and opportunities for individuals to direct their own learning.
As anyone familiar with Agile will know retrospectives are valuable so here are some reflections on the past twelve months at Informed.
Informed really challenges the perception that the tech industry is restricted to coding and technical development. There’s a diversity of people and roles who contribute to the implementation of our transformation projects; the freedom I was given to experience these roles has shown me where my passion and skills lie, and how to pursue them.
At the start of the year I was surprised by the level of responsibility I was entrusted: I was treated like an established member of the team. There’s pressure to support your colleagues but lots of support in return, and the resources are always there to help you produce work you can be proud of.
The most significant skill I’ve picked up at Informed is how to work with and assist colleagues around you. There is always someone who is willing to help out, which in turn has motivated me to become that person for my peers.
In the future, I’ll look to apply the real technical skills that I have developed over my time here, an invaluable understanding of workload management and a keen mind-set to follow through with my ambitions.

At Informed you’re put right into the action, supporting your team and undergoing training to deliver quality work for our clients. You’re treated just like any other team member; your skills and integrity are really valued and it’s a great example of what to expect from a job in the tech industry.
I have improved my technical skills tenfold this year, and this has given me a huge boost in confidence. I know that I can tackle most technical problems in a task, and the experience has helped me identify my strengths and areas of development.
The role has also taught me the importance of resilience. The work can be challenging, but solving issues with the support of my peers has allowed me to rise to the challenge and uncover new skills in self-management and motivation.
The year has given me great insight into the tech industry, and will aid me in deciding how I want to shape my career. I have a much better idea of where my strengths and interests lie, and what I can do to ensure I make the most of them.

Having an active input to Informed’s project delivery has given me valuable experience of different aspects of working in consulting. I have developed skills in engaging with clients in a professional manner, and have been involved in various roles across the project team. Through this I have gained a rich insight into project delivery from inception to completion.
In my time at Informed I have been a main developer on an Alpha stage of a product, supported a proof of concept to deliver in Beta stage, and engaged with research, development and testing activities. This work showed the clients the high level features we could bring to deliver a robust, high speed solution with zero downtime and high extensibility.
A key thing I’ve taken from this year is the significance of documenting and recording work, to ensure that my progress is valuable to my team and in line with company standards. Commenting on code and creating documentation guides allows others to understand your work, and this has helped me develop further skills in knowledge sharing and collaboration.

I wasn’t expecting to have such a great support network alongside a variety of different responsibilities. From day one, I felt no different to any other member of the staff and have no qualms about raising any concerns that I may have.
A big achievement for me was helping to transition a major project to Private Beta. I was a member of the development team for several months beforehand, and it was really rewarding to reach a milestone that myself and my colleagues had worked hard to accomplish.
Working at Informed has taught me how to better manage my time, maintain work-life balance and prioritise my work appropriately.
I used to think that IT companies were restricted to employing cookie-cutter, like-minded developers who had the same skills. Yet, being at Informed has given me the chance to work alongside people from a range of different backgrounds. This has allowed me to gain insight on a wide variety of different fields as well as developing my software development experience.
During these twelve months, I’ve been able to develop my presentation and communication skills extensively. I’ve been able to step out of my comfort zone and engage with clients face-to-face which is something I had never had the opportunity to do prior to working here.
